Mystery Playhouse - Pgm 129
Once again we offer up an episode of “Mystery Playhouse”, a “catch-all” Armed Forces Radio series dedicated to mystery and detective shows that often includes some interesting uncirculated or rare material. I love the AFRS openings of this series with a host that’s a bit of a cross between the “Suspense” “Man in Black” and “Inner Sanctum”’s Raymond - “Hello creeps!”

Program 129 is a rebroadcast of NBC’s “Molle Mystery Theater” from October 5, 1945. In this episode, “Angel Face”, a murdering woman finds her latest victim returning from the grave.
The show was transferred directly from an original AFRS transcription. Note that there’s groove damage in the first half-minute or so of the disc, but the sound is quite good otherwise.

Thanks for all that you are doing to preserve OTR. I really enjoy your site greatly.
This script was on Molle twice, 10/5/45 and 12/20/46. Is there anything in the show to be certain that this is the 1945 version? Is the clue in the AFRS show number or in the code numbers on the transcription?

I’m going by Goldin’s database on dating this one and, based on the AFRS program number and other AFRS discs I have from the same time period, it appears to be right.

I remember the Mystery Theatre well on AFN in the early 70s. AFN was the first opportunity I had to listen full otr programs. It wasn’t until later I found that the Mystery Theatre shows actually came from many sources. Thanks for stirring up good memories. Best, Steve
