Jimmy Powers, NBC sportscaster, steps up the mic again as host of "The Grantland Rice Story", a mid-fifties syndicated Thesaurus series based on "The Tumult and the Shouting", Rice's autobiography.
In program GRS-32, Powers narrates Rice's story of "Big" Jim Thorpe, the Native American considered one of the greatest all-around athletes of the past century. As a bit of trivia, Thorpe passed away in 1953, just a couple of years before this program was recorded. Does anyone talk about polo anymore? Well, to Grantland Rice, the famous early 20th century sportswriter, it was just another competitive sport that he wrote about during his long and storied career. Program GRS-31 in the syndicated series "The Grantland Rice Story" is titled "Polo's Greatest". Our narrator, as usual, is NBC sportscaster Jimmy Powers and our guest on this episode is Devereux Milburn, Jr, a well-known polo player of the 40s and 50s.

Jimmy Powers returns again this week to narrate the NBC Thesaurus syndicated series, "The Grantland Rice Story" from circa 1955-56.
Program GRS-30 in the series is titled "Through the Mists". In this episode, the famous sportswriter discusses in his memoirs something closer to his heart than sports - poetry. The show was mastered to digital from an original RCA Thesaurus 12" transcription, matrix number F7-MR-5190-1.

Now this week's entry in "The Grantland Rice Story", a Thesaurus syndicated program from the mid-1950s with sportscaster Jimmy Powers reading excerpts from the autobiography of the legendary sportswriter.
Program 27 in the series is "Sport Films", where Rice discusses the movie shorts he produced over the years that featured major sports personalities. The guest on the program is Rod Warren, a football player from Penn State, that worked with Rice on the films. Our program was transferred from an original RCA Thesaurus 12" transcription, matrix number F7-MR-5124-1. The opening theme, by the way, is off-speed on the original disc.

Well, we're half-way through our year-long look at "The Grantland Rice Story", a sports series syndicated by Thesaurus circa 1955 and featuring NBC sportscaster Jimmy Powers reading selected material from the autobiography of the famous sportswriter and interviewing people who were connected with Rice's life.
Program GRS-26 is "My Friend, Joe Louis". The show was digitized from original RCA Thesaurus 12" transcription, matrix number F7-MR-5152-1. If you're just joining us for the series, here's a few factoids. The program was released at the same time as several other new series in mid-1955 by Thesaurus and promoted as part of the syndication service's 20th anniversary. The host of the show, Jimmy Powers, was the main boxing announcer for NBC from 1949 to 1960, according to the Wikipedia article on the "Gillette Calvacade of Sports". A 1950 "Billboard" article mentions that Powers was the highest paid broadcast in television at the time. His NY Times obituary noted that he was also a sports editor for the New York "Daily News".
