Saturday Apr 11, 2009
Our weekly dose of "The Adventures of Frank Race" continues with program 21 in the series, "The Adventure of Three on a Match". A rainy night in Bordeux brings a mysterious woman into Frank's life that's mixed up in a plot to embezzle funds from a charity for War orphans. Tom Collins, playing the part of Race, exudes his usual quota of nonchalant cool as bullets and fists fly in all directions.

Back to Frank Race for our weekly installment from this late 40s/early 50s syndicated noir series. In program 20, we go to a common setting for private eyes to sort a mystery - the fights - in "The Adventure of the Fourth Round Knockout".
The show was transferred from an original Bruce Eells and Associates red vinyl transcription set, matrix numbers UR-147684 AU-5 and UR-147685 AU-5. The sound levels are somewhat inconsistent on the original recording, btw; this isn't a problem with the transfer or mp3.

We start off our posts this week with another episode of "The Adventures of Frank Race", starring Tom Collins and syndicated in the early 1950s.
Let's give a listen to program 19 in our continuing series of two-fisted noir mysteries, where Race investigates "The Adventure of the Violent Virtuoso". A woman comes to Race, asking him to find a stolen ring - a theft committed by a well-known actress who happens to be a former romantic interest of Race. We continue our run of the Bruce Eells and Associates syndicated series, "The Adventures of Frank Race" with program 18 in the series, "The Adventure of the General's Lady". Tom Collins, as Frank Race, is having a quiet drink with his sidekick cab driver in a bar in Tunisia and winds up taking over a case from a fellow insurance investigator that has run into trouble. You know the drill - fisticuffs, broken glass, attractive mystery women.

We kick off this week's selection of old time radio shows with Tom Collins in the 1949 syndicated series, "The Adventures of Frank Race" as we go through each episode of the series in my transcription collection.
Frank Race just can't get a break. In previous episodes, he's been enjoying a quiet evening of classical music or a nice vacation and his cab driver sidekick bursts in, leading him to yet another case. This time, Race is interrupted in a Turkish bath and is mixed up in a case involving diamonds stolen during the War. It's program 17 in the series, "The Adventure of the Fat Man's Loot". The show was transferred from an original Bruce Eells and Associates red vinyl transcription set, matrix numbers UR-146553 AU-6 and UR-146554 AU-6.

It's time for another in our weekly series, "The Adventures of Frank Race", that will be running over the next few months. This week's show is "The Adventure of the Talking Bullet", where Race, portrayed by Tom Collins, sits down to enjoy some classical music on the radio and winds up embroiled in the case of a bank robber killer that has escaped from death row. It's program 16 in this syndicated noir adventure series recorded in 1949.

Update - I accidentally attached Pgm 14 to this post - it's fixed now with the correct episode number. Continuing our weekly look in on Tom Collins starring in "The Adventures of Frank Race", we give a spin to Program 15 in post. Race becomes entangled in "The Adventure of the Embittered Secretary", a mystery concerning a playboy and some missing jewelry.
The show was transferred from an original Bruce Eells and Associates vinyl transcription set, matrix numbers UR-145245 A6 and UR-145246 A6. Note that there were some engineering problems with the original recording, with sound levels varying quite a bit - it sounds like the disc cutting engineer was asleep at the wheel or the mixing board was having problems when the show was recorded.Sunday Feb 22, 2009

This week, we skip ahead to Program 14 in our ongoing series, "The Adventures of Frank Race". My set of original transcriptions is almost complete, but is unfortunately missing a few programs. If you want to catch up on the shows that are missing, someone has uploaded them at archive.org; however, the archive.org copies were made from multi-generation tape dubs, some transferred to digital at the wrong speed.
However, here on the blog we're going to hear Program 14, "The Adventure of the Vanishing Favorite", in a direct dub from a Burce Eells and Associates vinyl transcription set. In this episode, Race, played by Tom Collins, finds mystery at the race track. Funny business with horse racing seems to be a common plot device for many old time radio detective shows and most got around to a race horse plot at least once during their run. The matrix numbers of these transcription sides are UR-145239 A6 and UR-145240 A6.

Program 7 in the series, "The Adventure of the Beratian Letters", has Race taking in the sites in Paris with his taxi driver sidekick Mark. Of course, this can't be a relaxing vacation - Race is approached by a woman he encountered during the War seeking his help.
