Front Page Drama, Pgm 147

April 20th, 2009

Here's another episode in the long-running series "Front Page Drama", a weekly quarter hour dramatic show based on stories in the "American Weekly" distributed with Hearst Newspapers.

Our little play in this episode is "The Devil's Crib", a mysterious story about old lighthouses, star-crossed lovers and ghosts from the depths of the tumultuous sea.  This was syndicated as program 147 in the series and was intended for broadcast February 15, 1936.

Transferred from original RCA Victrolac transcription, matrix MS98935.

Is there a Jungle Jim transcription on the reverse side of this? I understand Langlois-Wentworth sent double-sided transcriptions like that to stations.

Langlois-Wentworth later expanded into Lang-Worth Feature Programs Inc., which provided musical shows. Cy Langlois also set up a company to provide background music to be used in radio and films, and another company that created generic jingles for commercials.

Indeed, there is a Jungle Jim on the other side - I posted a series of four “Jungle Jim” shows a few months ago and this program is on the flip side of the transcription.

All the discs were found in upstairs storage in an old store in Arizona and they were still in their original shipping containers from RCA with the address labels where they were sent to a Prescott, Arizona radio station. One still had the original unused special Shadowgraph needle that was to be used to play the disc.
