Well, we're half-way through our year-long look at "The Grantland Rice Story", a sports series syndicated by Thesaurus circa 1955 and featuring NBC sportscaster Jimmy Powers reading selected material from the autobiography of the famous sportswriter and interviewing people who were connected with Rice's life.
Program GRS-26 is "My Friend, Joe Louis". The show was digitized from original RCA Thesaurus 12" transcription, matrix number F7-MR-5152-1. If you're just joining us for the series, here's a few factoids. The program was released at the same time as several other new series in mid-1955 by Thesaurus and promoted as part of the syndication service's 20th anniversary. The host of the show, Jimmy Powers, was the main boxing announcer for NBC from 1949 to 1960, according to the Wikipedia article on the "Gillette Calvacade of Sports". A 1950 "Billboard" article mentions that Powers was the highest paid broadcast in television at the time. His NY Times obituary noted that he was also a sports editor for the New York "Daily News".
