The Mad Hatterfields - Audition

March 5th, 2011

In this post, a half-hour audition for potential sponsors of the show "The Mad Hatterfields".  Previously broadcast as a quarter-hour serial on WLW-Mutual, this was an attempt to turn the show into something for an evening slot. Announcements during the show highlight different aspects of the talent involved in the series and the show's run as a fifteen minute feature.

In the dramatic portion of the show, Edward arrives and is introduced to the different characters in the eccentric Hatterfield family.  A small group of strings and piano are used for the music, rather than the solo piano used in the fifteen minute version of the series.

The show, perhaps dating from circa 1939-40, was transferred from an original World Broadcasting two-sided lacquer.

Rand, thank you so very much for tracking down “The Mad Hatterfields”! This has long been the “holy grail” of Cincinnati OTR collectors. Older Cincinnatians long asked me for a copy of the program and I had to inform them (erroneously, as it now turns out) that it is one of the sad list of once-popular programs which simply do not survive.

Hi… RE: Mad Harrerfields, you show a photo of the label, from World Broadcasting. World was a music and program supplier for many years. For much of their time they produced VERTICAL CUT discs, under license from Western Electric. In the mid to late ’50’s they went to lateral cut, although early on they used rubber stamps to show they were lateral, as the labels still said vertical. In the early ’60’s they went to Lp’s, though they were NOT spiraled. That said, I suspect the disc you show was made in the ’50’s, although the content may well have come from the ’30’s or ’40’s, from the WLW masters.

Just learned of your site, and now you are looking for a job. Sorry about that.
